Different kinds of bugs and plants you can find in your garden.

Here are a few I would like to share with you!

Bugs in the Garden from A to H

Ants

 

 

  • Ants are social insects they are clean and tidy.

  • Ants live in large groups, called 'colonies' and are controlled by their Queen.

  • Can lift 20 times its own body weight.

Bees

 

 

  • They have three types in each colony: the Queen, the Worker, and the Drone.

  • Bees make honey from pollination (see the yellow-orange pollination on the Bee's leg).

  • Only the Queen and the Worker Bees can sting. Ouch!

Caterpillars

 

 

  • Caterpillars are larvas (insect babies) of Butterflies and Moths.

  • They shed their skin to make room for growth.

  • Wraps into coccoons after shedding their skin a few times.

Earthworms
  • Earthworms have no arms, legs, or eyes. Their sense of touch guides them. They use tiny bristles on their body to move.

  • They are not insects but annelids.

  • They can eat their weight each day.

Grasshoppers

 

 

  • Doesn't have a pupae (coccoon) stage, but has larva, nymph, and adult.

  • Can leap about 20 times the length of their body.

  • Can survive almost everywhere and only eats plants.

Dragonflies

 

 

  • There are more then 5000 known species of dragonflies.

  • Their larval stage can last up to 2 years. The larva of the dragonflies are aquatic and carnivourous.

  • Dragonflies are expert flies. They can fly straight up and down, and can fly backwards. 

Flies

 

 

  • Flies are the most common of all insects.

  • They can jump up and backwards when taking off in flight.

  • They have stages of larva, pupae (coccoon), and adult.

  • Like to perch on things like wire and string.

Hornets

 

 

  • Hornets make their nests out of mud and wood.

  • Hornets can be found throughtout most of The United States, Asia, Europe, and Canada.

  • Males don't have stingers, but fertile females do.

  • Hornets are inactive at night and are sensitive to light.

Plants from A to H

Aloe Vera

 

 

  • Aloe Vera is easy to grow indoors and outdoors.

  • The gel inside the leaves are beneficial and can treat many illnesses. It can be rubbed on the skin to treat rashes or as vapor to treat asthma.

  • It can also be consumed as juice.

Bamboo

 

 

  • Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth!

  • It's shoots can be cut down to make an ingredient for soups and salads.

  • They can be tall and thin or short and bushy.

Cactus

 

 

  • The plural word for Castus is Cacti.

  • Cacti live in dry and hot places, like deserts.

  • Their needles are really pointy and will hurt! Use thick gloves when handling one.

  • They hold liquid in their trunks. If you're in a desert and you began to get thirsty, find and cut open a cactus!

Echinacea
  • Echinacea is part of the daisy family.

  • It is an herb that can treat the common cold. Native Americans use this plant to also cure snake bites.

  • Echinacea grows best in wide open places such as frields and open praries.

Garden Petunia

 

 

  • Garden Petunias thrive in well-drained soil and full sunlight. They can make any garden colorful!

  • They come in five, vibrant colors: pink, purple, yellow, white, and red.

  • They bloom during the summer until the first frost.

Daffodil

 

 

  • The Daffofil is the national flower of Wales, a country in Europe.

  • They come in many colors such as yellow, orange, white, pink, and green.

  • They are one of the first flowers to bloom in Spring.

Fan Palm

 

 

  • There are thousands of species of Fan Palms.

  • Fan Palms are a common sight in California and the western coast of the US.

  • The well-known type of Fan Palm is the Coconut Palm, which bears the Coconut fruit.

Honeysuckle

 

 

  • The Honeysuckle is a flowering shrub or vine.

  • They have medicinal purposes and can treat sore throat and headaches.

  • Their nectar is incredibly sweet, just like honey!

  • Honeysuckle flowers bloom from April to July.
